Sport Mouthguards

Mouthguards play an essential part in preventing dental injury whilst playing a sport.

We use professional laboratory constructed mouthguards. They range from beginner to heavy pro, and the appropriate model will be selected based on age and type of sport being played. Each mouthguard is labelled with the patient’s name and phone number for easy identification.

Common dental injuries incurred during sport or leisure activities include:

  • cut lips
  • cut gums
  • cut cheeks
  • cuts to the tongue or face
  • chipped teeth
  • broken teeth
  • knocked out teeth
  • broken jaw.

Wearing an appropriately structured mouthguard while participating in sports will protect against dental injuries. Players of all ages involved in sports and activities where they are at risk of an injury to the face should protect their teeth with a properly fitted mouthguard.

A protective mouthguard should:

  • considerably reduce the risks of injury to your upper front teeth;
  • reduce the risks of damage to your upper or lower back teeth, after a traumatic closure of the lower jaw (i.e. your opposing teeth will be protected from traumatic contacts against each other);
  • considerably reduce your risk of mouth and lip lacerations;
  • reduce the risk of damage to your tongue at impact;
  • reduce the risk of fractures of your lower jaw (body of the mandible) and of your mandibular condyles (sub-condylar fractures);
  • reduce the risk of damage to your TMJ (temporomandibular joint);
  • if worn over orthodontics, a mouth guard will reduce the risk of penetrating injuries to you, or other players, from the brackets and wiring in your orthodontic treatment.

    Temporary Closure

    Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has placed dentistry on high level restrictions.

    We have therefore made the difficult decision to suspend practice at City Beach Dental Centre for the near future.

    If you are an existing patient of the practice and have a genuine dental emergency, please call 93858538 and you will be directed to either Tony or Kate. They will triage you, provide advice and arrange treatment as appropriate.

    Please be aware that treatment options are very limited at this time and we will always endeavour to do our best for you.

    Thank you for all your support over the years and look after yourselves during this difficult time.
